I Am Heath Ledger DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

Co-directed by Adrian Buitenhuis and Derik Murray, I Am Heath Ledger is an intimate look at an actor whose career was cut short too soon in a very tragic way.

Whether you knew him from his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight or his earlier films, such as 10 Things I Hate About You or A Knight’s Tale, Heath Ledger always knew how to make an entrance and command the screen. Years later, he is still able to do the same thing in I am Heath Ledger, with home videos and enchanting discussions. All combined with interviews from Ledger’s friends, family and close associates, which present us with the man behind the camera.

Celebrating the joy of life that Ledger had, the documentary highlights how open and willing Ledger was to try and live life to the fullest. From moments he shot at home to videos inside the studio, he always wanted to share his love of acting with the world. As well, as the fun, the cheeky side he was known for having (look up a YouTube clip of him kissing a very surprised woman on a red carpet to see what I mean!).

Everyone interviewed in the film tells or seems to tell it how it really is. They don’t make up an image of Ledger that people may want to see, they just give an image of him that people may have already known or believed in. What they saw every day.

The film never really touches on the tragic way Ledger’s life ended, but it doesn’t really need to. Although some interviews discuss the actor’s demons, none feel the need to let it bring down what the film has set out to do. It isn’t about talking about something that many people know about, it is about talking about the man behind the camera. It is this reason which makes it easy to see why his family agreed to it.

I Am Heath Ledger is a documentary film that takes audiences behind the scenes of a man people think that they know. There is so much more to him and the talent he had grown with every film that he did. His acting in The Dark Knight, Brokeback Mountain and 10 Things I Hate About You, will make sure that he is always remembered, but this film will make sure people knew how much challenging work went into each performance.

There so, I am giving it…
