The Edge Of Seventeen DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

After being nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the film, Hailee Steinfeld returned to the big screen in The Edge of Seventeen to critical acclaim. For many, the film will be just another teenage film full of the struggles of life, but when you look at the heart of it, it is a lot more than that.

Steinfeld plays Nadine, a teenager who is struggling with the loss of her dad, her brother’s relationship with her best friend and the interests of an admirer, who she isn't sure if she likes or not. Unsure what life has in store for her, she finds it hard to deal with her emotions and in many scenes goes to over the top, in a way that makes you want to shout at her to stop because you have experienced those weird feelings.

Just like most of us teenagers, to her, the world is a place that is hard to deal with, whatever the situation. Throughout the film, director Kelly Fremon Craig uses this turmoil of the teenage mind and life to reverence old school films that made the teen film genre. But manages to do it in such a way that it keeps the film feeling fresh and for a modern audience.

He manages to connect the viewer to Steinfeld, who plays a witty teenager throughout, as she faces every obstacle in her way to show them that the little mistakes she makes are things we may have all done at some point. And many things we haven’t as well. This is why the play off against Woody Harrelson, who plays her teacher, provides a true connection between student and teacher, as he shows her there isn’t anything that we can’t deal with in life.

Teen films haven’t been this good for a long time, with the last acceptable ones being Easy A and The Duff, but now if they stick to this form, they will be back with a vengeance. Steinfeld has set the bar high for others who take the lead and it is going to be a tough job to match up to her.

Overall the film is a gripping and witty story that takes away some of the serious elements of the audiences life throughout its run time. There is an ease with watching it and that doesn’t come very often in teen films of recent years.

There so I am giving it...

4 Stars
