The Small World of Sammy Lee DVD Review

07:00:00

Good Morning Lovelies,

It seems like only yesterday we were sitting down and enjoying the films from the BFI London Film Festival. There is a sadness that has overcome us film fans since it ended, but now we can all be happy again because one of the films that was restored for the event has been released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

As part of Studiocanal’s vintage collection, the film The Small World of Sammy Lee, follows Sammy Lee as he works to raise the money he owes to a gangster. However, as the time runs out Sammy finds himself being followed by Patsy.

Played by Anthony Newley, the character of Sammy is a first look at how the gangster genre became so big in the UK. Newley has a great and powerful presence on screen that makes him stand out and control the audience. As does Julie Foster who plays Patsy. Both together present Soho, where the film is set, in a completely new and refreshing light.

Presenting a film such as this at the BFI London Film Festival was a clever move and shows audiences just how vital classics are to an industry and certain film genres. Many of them still pave the way for feature films.

There so I am giving the film...

4 Stars
